Dear Back or Hip Pain Sufferers,
If you haven't recently injured yourself, then I feel pain is our bodies way of saying there are things we need to address. I've found it's a combination of things: a balance that gets lasting results. Sometimes it really is just a few weeks of your time to really focus on yourself to identify what's needed to gain the back pain free life you want to lead for hopefully the next 10/20 years?
But knowing the total combination of what's right for you is not always obvious, but it can become obvious. I believe my STOP Back & Hip Pain action plan and CD could be your insight to the back pain free life you deserve.
So rather than worry or spend time thinking about what's right, just taking the one step and having that intention and determination that you are going to STOP your back or hip pain is all you need to concern yourself with today. Don't think about the past or the future, just the present!
Recently I was reminded of this. My dog had a re-occurring shoulder problem which deteriorated to the point of a permanent limp following a fast run over a ploughed field. I took him to the vet and had an x-ray which did not show anything. The next stage was a doggy phsio each week. She gave him a massage, a few stretches, 10 minutes on a muscle building machine and light therapy, all in all a great treatment. I did the stretches (not me personally). Although I know stretches can be a temporary fix as they don't usually sort the underlining problem, I did them each day as instructed, along with ice and heat. Unfortunately after 4 treatments with only temporary benefits in between, the limp kept returning. The physio suggested the next stage was surgery.
At this stage, alarm bells rang!! I declined as I knew this would not be the answer and realised all the things I've said in my previous blogs, I wasn't doing myself! So I went home bordering on being angry at myself but with absolute determination I was going to sort out his shoulder problem once and for all. I had the intention and I kept saying I can do this; I'd sorted myself out (I've been back pain free from the start 2008) so this will be a breeze. At that point a new path was created.
Firstly we had been using his lead when he needed to go in the garden to prevent him from chasing squirrels, but occasionally we didn't bother in the hope he would not run down the garden. But of course he did and then we were back to square one, he was limping again! So everyone in my house was under strict instruction to use his lead every single time he went outside. I'd planned for a minimum of 4 weeks. Next I noticed when he went upstairs because of his weak shoulder his paw slide to the side, which of course I did not want, so a gate was put at the bottom of the stairs to stop him going up. We were carrying him down but 50% was not enough.
I then realised his morning game of throwing biscuits around the floor meant he slid all over the place because of our stone floors, again straining his shoulder, so this game was stopped completely. In the end the only thing he could do was walk around the house. His daily walk which I was told to start at 5 minutes, I reduced to 1 minute, as after one minute he would limp, so there was no point in walking him further.
The muscles from his shoulder to spine were tight from all the limping, so each day I put heat on these muscles to relax them and massaged the area, to release the spasm (this was exactly the same as me, but my spasm was in my bottom, the Periformis muscle). I then employed a similar method to my STOP Back & Hip Pain CD (but doggy possible) and rolled him onto his back. Then holding his body I rolled him from one side completely over to the other side which moved all the vertebrae of his spine releasing the tightness and tension and helping to realign the vertebrae which was being pulled at by the muscle tightness (2 of my STOP Back & Hip Pain routines cover the mobility of the spine which is essential to every movement we make) and did tiny shoulder movements as I do, but mine are co-ordinated with my hip.
Also I used ice on his shoulder to take away the inflammation, 10 minutes only, 3 or 4 times a day until he stopped limping and then heat to boost the circulation and healing for a week. I've found on myself using ice for more than 48 hours makes the area too cold, so I'd then alternate with heat, but if pain reoccurs then ice again.
All these things we have to listen to our bodies and do what is necessary and I've found it has to be on a daily basis. We build tension everyday which has to be released every day even if you don't have back pain! It may sound a lot, but mostly it was changing the way we had been doing things, stopping long and hard exercise and in reality just 20 minutes of my time each day. The signs of the result I was looking for became apparent by the 3rd or 4th day. I was over the moon! I gradually built up his walking by increasing 1 minute longer for a couple days and then increasing another minute and once I'd got him to 10 minutes, I then increased 2 or 3 minutes.
Gradually I've let him go in the garden without his lead and he is perfectly fine, using the stairs no problem, but the sliding on our floors with his ball and biscuit games have stopped for now and I don't let him off the lead when the field in not right. So really he was 100% well within two weeks and a few weeks more to build his strength.
If we have pain, we have imbalances and I've found muscles do not strengthen equally with imbalances so there is always a weakness. The tiny movements allow tension to loosen and tiny movements allow for realignment and once we are balanced and have co-ordinated movement, then we can do our activities without injury or pain - but sometimes we just need that break to get ourselves right!
The whole point of this story is that we have to take ownership of our situations ourselves. I had to look at my dog's lifestyle and how it was stopping his shoulder from healing. Once I started to do that, it was easy, but I had to keep going and not get disheartened with a set back. This is no different to ourselves, moving awkwardly and overcompensating because of injury or restricting movement because of pain and sedimentary lifestyles because of work, all can cause muscle imbalances which alter posture which changes movement. If this change of movement is repeated long enough, these incorrect movements stay with us. So it is essential to start practising balanced, co-ordinated movement to unwind our situations to turn back time to the way we were and my STOP Back & Hip Pain CD can help you do that.
